Our hands shook, without a doubt each of us were worried. This was our first game since the start of winter break and our main center Bill was in China. Left with 6 players we all realized that we had to step up to the plate but, just a day before hopes had looked grim. I was being trained to be what Bill had been, a center but, our team had grown both lazy and tired. After immense amounts of training and a reminder to do our best we finally stepped foot into the court. We were going against Holy Name, a team we had beaten before but without a doubt was even more determined to win against us than ever before. Yet our team was going to never let that happen. The game started with a bang as, we got the tip. Brandon ran down the center and swiftly laid open a layup, as Calvin soon followed with a 3 pointer that would make the crowd go wild. The twins Damon and Darren set a fast and well played set of moves that would soon get us the ball. Damon ran up the left, while Darren ran up the right catching rebounds from both left and right putting balls up with ease. Alex shot a amazing shot down the right and I also managed to put some points on the board. By the end of the game everyone was out of breath the teamwork had been put to the test and had blown the expectations of anyone. With confidence our team looks forward to the next game and we hope to see another win. Happy Holidays everyone! Enjoy the rest of your break. Remember Basketball practice will resume at NDV on January 3rd! Hope you all have had a great break so far and enjoy the rest of it.

The first tournament game for the seventh graders ended in a victory. Everyone was having fun. Before the game, almost everyone was nervous yet excited to play. Some of us went from being scared, to ending up making our first basket ever. It looked like training, practicing hard, and pushing ourselves really paid off. The first quarter started with a splash. Everyone just felt it. We were all in the zone. We started the game off with Brendan drawing fouls and making shots every which way. Then Ace made his first shot ever. It was clear that we were feeling a little more confident after the quarter ended with us leading 11-0. Now it was the twins’ turns. Both taking turns making shots bringing us to a 23-0 lead at the half. By then, we were feeling a lot more confident. After each and everyone of us made a shot, we felt like we were ready for the next game, and this time even more confident. We ended up winning the game 39-2 and look forward to our next game against St. Cecilia on Wednesday. The 8th Grade girls were asked to recap and reflect on their season.
Annie - This year, I had a memorable season in volleyball. My classmates/friends Emily, Sharon, Isabella, and I had the opportunity to join a volleyball team of a fellow Catholic school nearby, NDV. I ended up on the 8-3 team with Emily. It's been a great 3 months playing with her and the rest of the girls from NDV on the team. We had an unforgettable regular season of 8-0 (undefeated) and recently won our playoff game. This particular year of volleyball is very special to me. It isn't only because of our record so far, but also the people I've met along the way who I now call friends. This is most likely my last year playing volleyball with the people on my current team. I can only hope to reunite and play volleyball with them some time since we'll probably have our own work and errands to do in high school. I really hope I continue to play (ideally trying out for my high school team and then making the team). I must admit, the record does make it something to remember because our team last year lost all 8 games. Joining NDV gave me a chance to actually play volleyball: bumping, setting, spiking, digging, diving. I appreciate Joey, our coach, Tim, and NDV’s sports director, Tsokas, for allowing me to experience what volleyball is really like. Please wish all of us luck for the championships, come and support! Last Thursday the 8-3 team played in round one of the playoffs. We were up against Holy Angels, who we won easily as our 1st game ever as a team. They were actually tied with Holy Name so they had to play against each other last Wednesday to determine who would play against us. Even though we nearly lost to Holy Name, Holy Angels were able to clutch a spot in the playoffs. I thought to myself, "They must have improved, we have to be ready." As usual, our team did well and we won in two sets. However, it was a pretty solid game from Holy Angels. I definitely saw improvement from them. The beginning of both sets had tight scores, but we managed to get ahead. Both sets ended with a score of 25-19. Good game Holy Angels! Isabella - This season the 8th grade girls and I got the opportunity to join NDV’s volleyball team. NDV is the nearby catholic kindergarten to 8th school. At first the girls and I were unsure about joining the team but we soon realized that it was a good opportunity for us. The girls were really nice and welcoming to us. Annie, Emily, Sharon, and I got split up into 2 different teams. Sharon and I were placed on 8-5 while Annie and Emily were placed in 8-3. My team had a season record of 6-2 and we earned a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately we came up short and lost. During the season I was able to spike more and I improved a lot. The other St. Mary’s girls and I were finally able to play with a team that is more suited to our skill level. Our coaches Tim and Mrs. Oltranti were extremely helpful and drove us to almost all the games because all our parents were usually at work. Thank you Tsiokas and Joey for allowing us to play with NDV. This season was definitely my favorite season out of all three years of playing volleyball. At the beginning of this season I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to join because of how last season went. Throughout this season I was able to bond with the NDV girls and they are all really good people to be around and friends with. I will continue to see some of them in the future but I hope that I will continue to be in contact with every one of the NDV girls. I am hoping that I will be attending the same high school as some of the girls. There were many memorable moments during this seasons with NDV, from throwing carrots at Sharon to Tim’s hilarious car rides. I will always be grateful towards Joey and Tsokas for arranging and allowing us the opportunity to play with NDV. I am satisfied with how I did this season even though there is always room for improvement and this is probably my last season playing volleyball. I don’t plan on playing in high school but volleyball will definitely be one of the most memorable things I did when I look back on my years at St. Mary’s. Emily - This year the 8th grade girls and I had an opportunity to join the NDV’s volleyball team. We were unsure about joining the team, but it ended up being a good opportunity for us. Annie, Isabella, Sharon, and I were split into two different teams. Annie and I placed on 8-3 together, Isabella and Sharon placed on 8-5. The girls from NDV were very happy and welcoming to us to be on their team. It’s been very fun playing with the team for 3 months. We had a memorable and fun regular season of 8-0, and we won our playoff game. This year of volleyball will be very unforgettable and memorable to me, because I was able to experience what real volleyball is like and I got to improve my spiking and diving. Last year I was too scared to spike balls because I thought that I’m not at that level yet. After joining the NDV team I gained the confidence to spike the ball and dive for the ball. My most memorable moment this season will be every time I spiked the ball over the net and the other team missed. I’m very thankful to Joey, Tsokus and our coach Tim for giving me an opportunity to seeing myself playing real volleyball on the courts, and give me the chance to experience what real volleyball is like and thank you Tim for driving me to all the games, since my parents are busy working. Please come and support us at the championship game on Nov. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Thomas More (50 Thomas More Way SF, CA 94132) against St. Anne. Sharon - Last year, I had to play volleyball because our team didn't have enough people. I've played volleyball for fun before but never thought I would play for a school team. This year Annie, Isabella, Emily and I got to join NDV's volleyball team. I didn’t know how I felt about playing with another school but it ended up being a great experience. I was part of the 8-5 team and we did pretty well this season. Our record was 6-2 and got a spot in the playoffs. We were second place in our division during our regular season. OLV was first and they only had one loss which was to us. One of the teams we lost to was St.Finn Barr who we played during playoffs. The scores were pretty close but we lost in our third set. I had a lot of fun during this season. This is only my second year playing volleyball. I didn't improve as much as I expected myself to but to be honest I had pretty high expectations. I liked joining NDV because all four of us got to play with people and in the division at our own levels. Last year some of us were good at volleyball while some were rookies and that did not turn out that great... When Joey first told us we were going to join NDV’s volleyball team, I was pretty nervous but they all turned out to be very nice and welcoming people. I had memorable moments with each person that I will remember and will laugh at when I look back on them. The most memorable game this season for me was the game against St.Monica. We struggled with their really low ceiling a few times but that didn't stop us from winning the game. This game was the most memorable game because I had a total of 21 serves over. That’s pretty impressive for me especially since I’ve only played volleyball for a year. Lastly I would like to thank Joey and Tsokas for letting me play volleyball this year. Both girls team made the CYO playoffs! 8-3 ended their season with a perfect 8-0 record. The 8-5 girls ended their regular season schedule with a 3 game win streak to end their season with a 6-2 record. They will seek a win against St. Finn Barr who beat them in week 5. 8-3's playoff game will be against either Holy Angels or Holy Name.
8-3 will play on Thursday November 12th, 2015at 8:00 PM at St. Emydius (255 Jules Ave San Francisco, CA 94112 ) 8-5 will play on Saturday November 14th, 2015 at 3:00 PM vs. St, Finn Barr at St. Emydius (255 Jules Ave San Francisco, CA 94112 ) Please come out and support our girls. They worked very hard all year! |
